Quiosque do Fritz

Last Thursday I went to one of my favourite places to eat (and drink) well in Volta Redonda, Fritz's Kiosk, in Sider Shopping. The waitress was alone and busy with things to be cleaned, so I had about fifteen more minutes to sketch. The shopping mall isn't usually crowded at this time, but I could add some people in nearby tables and bring a little more life to the sketch.

Eurotrip 3/3

The last part of the trip was London, where I bought a black Posca 0.7 mm pen. I tried using the tip of the pen with varied pressure, and got results which I did like! The first place I visited was Trafalgar square, famous for its statue of Admiral Nelson and the four lions, water fountains, lots of street artists and the National Gallery.

A próxima parada foi a Praça do Parlamento, onde desenhei as Casas do Parlamento e o famoso Big Ben (Torre Elizabeth).

Next stop: Parliament square, where I sketched the Houses of Paliament and the Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower). Though I like the result, I think I should have used less details. Such a shame I had to be far away too, since the square itself was being remodelled.

Leadenhall Market served as scenario for two Harry Potter films, though it's a place with a couple of shops and food franchises. Very elegant, what caught my attention were the dragon details on top of the columns. The gentleman on the left was talking about his new flat... complaining that it was 'too big', though it was good.

One of the places I liked sketching the most was Tower Bridge. I'd just visited there, and took the chance to sketch it and learn about its structure and details. It was a sunny day, and there were many people sitting under the shade of a nearby building. I like the economy of details in the further parts of the towers, and decided to stick the ticket I used during the visit.

At Westminster Cathedral, I decided to try out some distortion. There was a couple of tourists taking photos for a long time, so I decided to include them in the sketch. A guard was curious to see my drawing, and found interesting the fact that I bent the cathedral. I promised him I caused no damage to the structure of the building!

Back to Trafalgar square, it was time to sketch the National Gallery. It took me two days, since it started raining a lot during my first try, but I managed to finish it on the following day. Though I like the way I used more or less details to highlight some areas, I would have liked some red in the sketch (but decided not to use it later, at home).

Everything that's good has to end, so this is the the last sketch of this trip, done in a relaxing moment in a park near Oxford street. Near me, there was a man listening to music sung in a language I don't know, smoking a cigarette and chilling out; families chatting, children playing, some people sleeping. I sat by a tree, got a brush pen because I wanted to try out something different and work slowly. Some friends said it's the sketch they like the most. I honestly can't choose one. I like the variety of experiences I had during one month sketching freely, and London, in fact, was where I felt closer to an 'honest' drawing.

Eurotrip 2/3

Vimos as gôndolas flutuando, o cheiro salgado do mar, vários pássaros, turistas colocando o pé na água, aí eu peguei o caderno e resolvi registrar o momento.

Yes, I've started with a picture this time. This drawing was really spontaneous, and I'll tell you why: after walking from the train station to the Grande Canal, my friend Bea and I decided to sit down and relax a bit. I saw the gondolas floating, the salty smell of the sea, many birds, tourists trying to step in the water, and so I got my sketchbook and decided to register the moment. We went to a restaurant to have some pasta after that - of course!

Oxford parecia ideal pra usar a caneta sépia novamente.

Oxford seemed to be the ideal place for my sepia pen. I started with Carfax Tower, in the city centre. A high one, used in the past as a watching tower, to help defend from invaders.

The Radcliffe Camera, which I visited in a library tour, was named after John Radcliffe, a wealthy and notable doctor, who left a huge estate after he died. Though it's an old building, the place itself is very modern inside. It's interesting to know that, in the beginning, librarians had troube keeping things in order due to the round shape of the building.

The church of Saint Mary the Virgin is right in front of the Radcliffe camera, and before sketching the place, I could climb the tower and have a wonderful view up there. There are many grotesques, I was totally in love with the details!

To finish my architectural trip around the city, I visited Oxford castle. The guided tour is very rich in stories and details, and the place (which has a 'haunted corner') served not only as shelter, but also as a prision. There was a really nice lady working at the shop there, with whom I could have good conversation and decided to take note of it.

I had a last sketch at the Eagle and Child pub, place where important names such as Tolkien and Lewis used to have a beer. It's a cool place, quiet, and the fish and chips are excellent! I confess it was a great place to finish this part of the trip!

Eurotrip 1/3

These days, I was thinking about how much I've changed since I started studying drawing, and of course I was wonderning about my drawing style too. Though I usually like techniques that will take a long time to finish a drawing (such as stippling), I sometimes have to sketch in a much simpler way, and it can be difficult to find yourself familiar with what you see on the paper.
Last year, I took a trip around different places, in order to see an art exhibition (Hieronymus Bosch), see a friend (Beatrice), sketch and visit new places, such as familiar ones. I'll post the first part here, that includes Amsterdam, Madrid and Florence. In a second moment, I'll post my Venice and Oxford sketches and later the London ones.
Amsterdam was the place I sketched the least. Couldn't sleep well, had just a few days and lots to do: places to visit, rainy days not well enjoyed, and I confess I was a little lazy to catch a sketchbook and start working. This sketch was made at the Museumplein (Museum Square, where I decided to sketch the Rijksmuseum, a Dutch national museum), at the end of a rainy day, after a long nap on the grass. There were people around having a picnic, playing football and even dating. Honestly, I don't like this sketch so much, and it was the first time I used a Pentel pocket brush pen.

Madrid, second city in the schedule, totally amazed me! I had a stroll around the city, and stopped by Mercato de San Miguel to eat gaspacho, patata brava (spicy potatoes) and had some beer. The day after was a Saturday, which I spent going to the Thyssen Bornemisza and Prado museums. After the amazing Bosch exhibition, I stopped by a small square at the entrance of the Prado to sketch the San Jeronimo church. There was a man playing the acoustic guitar near me, and I felt really nice with it.

On the next day, a Sunday, I had a guided tour around Madrid, which gave me little time to stop and sketch during the walk. After a lovely journey through Spanish history, I stopped by the Plaza Mayor to sketch the view. The clocks do have different times, I can't remember why, but the guide told us one of them only strikes once a year, if I'm not wrong. Another interesting thing is that there were lots of artists selling their work there, and though I didn't interact with any of them, I felt comfortable to know they were there.

After three lovely days, I headed to warm and crowded Florence. The journey started with a short delay, because we had last-minute changes. We were going to Pisa, not Florence, due to the wind. Of course, the city is amazing, and you see art everywhere. The first sketch happened as I was doing the laundry and found myself with plenty of time in the morning. Just sketched a simple house in the street (yes, I decided to 'clean' some wires from the drawing this time).

Gosto bastante dessa minha 'rápida impressão' do local.

The colours of the city made me head to an art shop and buy a sepia pen, which I found would suit the place really well. Unfortunately, as I had to wait until the shop opened after lunch, I got a nib pen and sat down near the Basilica de Santa Croce to sketch a little. Lots of people everywhere, passers-by getting curious to know what I was doing. I really like my quick impression of the place. I started feeling I was getting somewhere with my drawings (though I felt very well about the ones from Madrid too).

To finish with, I went to the city centre and sketched the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) with my new sepia pen, still mixing with some blacks here and there. Palazzo Vecchio is the Florentine town hall, but also a museum with works from many important local artists, such as Michelangelo Buonarroti and Giorgio Vasari. I know you might be asking why I didn't sketch the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. The truth is I did, starting by the duomo (dome), but I confess the sketch is very poor and incomplete, so I decided to go there again some day and do a decent job (and have ice cream in one of the shops around there).

This is it for now. It was good to write about it, to be able to 'review' so many good memories. I hope to post again soon, maybe tomorrow, if I find the time.

Bairro Boa Vista (Boa Vista neighbourhood)

Today I went to Barra Mansa city to take my girlfriend to work, and took my time to sketch part of the view from the room where she stays. Boa Vista neighbourhood is very big, in a poor part of the city, and we can suppose it's growing up the hill (this is what the houses seem to indicate, by their position). There are lots of green areas there. Those bars are nothing more than part of the window, that I thought would be interesting to frame the sketch.

This week was a rush! Classes from morning 'till late in the evening most days, but in the middle of the storm, I found some time to have a beer and celebrate my friend's birthday, Vall, on Wednesday. We went to Barreto to have some burgers, and I could sit down and sketch two couples that were sharing a table. The woman whose face I could see seemed worried most of the time, though the conversation seemed lively and cheerful.

On Friday morning, I took some time to stop and watch a place I usually pass by running. Itapoã, a club in my town, has lots of green areas, and I particylarly feel very comfortable there, though some summer weekends are very busy. When I'd already started, a couple of acquaitances passed by, and I decided to capture such 'impression' in the sketch too, even drawing over some lines I'd done.

Another one from São Paulo, this time in a square behind the building I was staying. I think it's OK, for a third watercolour drawing... the idea is to go back there in the future, and sketch it again to check my drawing evolution =)
